Belgian chocolate, British ice cream?
Ik was van plan om een stukje te schrijven over Belgian chocolate, een smaak van Haägen Dazs die me wel kan bekoren ('t is te zeggen: ik trek hier om de vijf minuten de diepvries open voor nog een hap) en botste op dit:
"A Belgian firm selling chocolate might be annoyed by the fact that the average consumer cannot discern Belgian Chocolate from Chocolate from other member states just by the label. The worry is that if the consumer cannot easily find the Belgian chocolates he or she will buy chocolates from anywhere. The Belgian Chocolatier might concede to have ?Made in the EU? printed in the small letters at the bottom of the box, but emphasise the origin of their wares by having ?Belgian Chocolate? emblazoned on the package.
In the United Kingdom, one can buy Haagen-Dazs? Belgian Chocolate Ice Cream, which contains chocolate from Belgium but is British ice cream. Haagen-Dazs? use of the adjective Belgian for their truffles may not be as accurate as a Belgian manufacturer would like, however the onus is on the Belgian firm to distinguish their product as being entirely Belgian. Whereas the discerning consumer might notice that Haagen-Dazs? Ice Cream is only 13% Belgian in content and made in the UK, the potential directive would require the Belgian Ice Cream maker to advertise their product as ?Belgian Chocolate Ice Cream, manufactured in Belgium, made in the EU.? The hope is that this draws customers away from the ?Chocolate Ice Cream, made in the EU? which could not have any connection with Belgium whatsoever."
Wel, euh: of er al dan niet Belgische chocolade in Belgian chocolate van Haägen Dazs zit, weet ik niet. Maar ik vind het lekker. En ook schandalig duur.
